Avro Lancaster

Our history

The Group was first established on 17th May 1943. The same day as the RAF 617 Squadron returned from bombing raids using the top-secret Barns Wallis Bouncing Bomb on the German Dams.

During World War II, workers at the Metropolitan-Vickers factory in Trafford Park formed the 3rd Davyhulme Scout Group. This factory were building the Lancaster Bomber.

Some past leaders of 3rd Davyhulme were Lancaster crew members. Some of today’s members have ancestors who worked at Metro-Vickers building the Lancaster Bomber.

Roy Chadwick was the chief designer of the Lancaster Bomber and lived in Urmston. During his apprenticeship at British Westinghouse, he worked alongside colleagues such as George Hicks and Lesley Naylor. George was our first Group Scout Leader and Lesley was the District Commissioner for many years.

Our Merlin Explorer Scouts take their name from the Lancaster ‘s Rolls Royce engine. And our group badge is a Lancaster Bomber over the Scout Arrowhead. Permission was given by the RAF, The Bomber Association and British Aerospace to use the Lancaster and the associated names for our emblem.
